What’s it about?

Savoring the freedom of no longer having to take care of anyone else or having to make a living, I have all the time I need to write about joy and grief, fulfillment and loss, and finding beauty everywhere.

About Betty

I spent my adult life balancing raising my babies and working in my studio. I made a living early on as a radio disc jockey, waiting tables, cleaning houses, as a companion to an emotionally troubled adult, as the director of the Creative Education Center of Woodstock. I sculpted in dough and later in porcelain. I lived on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, on a mountain top in far northern British Columbia, on a beach in Vancouver, on the outskirts of Woodstock in Bearsville, and on a remote farm in upstate New York. I dropped out…I dropped back in. I sold my work at craft fairs and gift shops, and cranked out freelance articles for a travel industry magazine. I honed my writing and computer skills while indulging in occasional free travel with complimentary bookings in five star hotels. I balanced sculpting and writing, filling orders and meeting deadlines until my life was interrupted by the needs of my elderly aunt and uncle for whom I became caretaker for a decade.

Currently, I’m the host of Words Carry Us livestream from Green Kill Gallery in Kingston, NY. I’m an improvisational actor having performed for close to 40 years with Community Playback Theatre. My first book All My Monsters Are Dead or Why I Love Being Old was published by Codhill Press last year when I was 89.  I am blessed with a slew of amazing grandkids. I take three Pilates classes a week. … I nap a lot.

I plan to post essays and poems weekly on Substack. I write poetry and memoir and a little fiction.
